Forgetting Which Division You're In
At a national student music competition, the elementary division played their set piece first. A junior-high student scheduled near the front had heard the elementary set piece dozens of times backstage โ and when his turn came, he was so nervous that he stumbled into playing the elementary piece, forgetting which one was actually his.
What to practice: some children are especially easily influenced by others. Before a competition or exam, avoid listening to other performers โ keep the attention guarded on your own piece. (A pure recital is a different mindset โ there, watching others perform is nourishment.)
